History of the Hotel Albert 1er

When it was founded in 1903, the hotel was called “La pension du Chemin de Fer”. Indeed, Joseph Carrier, the founder, wanted to take advantage of the arrival of the railway line in 1902 and opened this small establishment next to the Chamonix station. Albert I, King of the Belgians, died in 1934. To pay tribute to this experienced mountaineer, the hotel was renamed in his honour. (A refuge on the Tour glacier was also named “Refuge Albert 1er” in 1930.)
In 1967, Marcel Carrier was awarded his first star in the Michelin Guide. Major works were undertaken in 1996 and the Hameau Albert 1er opened in the winter of 1997. This Hamlet includes 3 chalets – farms of 12 rooms, a SPA area, a swimming pool and the restaurant “La Maison Carrier”. The hotel joined the prestigious “Relais et Châteaux” chain in 1999. The same year, Pierre Carrier was awarded the 2nd star in the Michelin guide.
